About

Our Mission

Open Catskills is dedicated to supporting refugees and asylum seekers who are finding their home in Delaware County, New York, and advocating for the human rights and freedoms of displaced people fleeing difficult situations. To these ends, Open Catskills partners with individuals, community groups, and other organizations in Delaware County and beyond to create opportunities for asylum seekers and refugees to rebuild their lives here in the Catskills.

History

Open Catskills was established in 2021 by Delaware County, New York residents Dan Gashler, Esther Lee, Sangeeta Pratap, and Mina Takahashi. The original name of the group was Delaware County Citizens for Refugee Support (DCCRS). Together with community members, DCCRS brought four asylum seekers to Delaware County, conducted a winter clothing drive for hundreds of migrant families housed at Floyd Bennett Field in New York City, assisted refugee families and individuals employed locally via the Department of Labor; and is currently supporting two refugee students at SUNY Delhi under the auspices of the Welcome Corps on Campus program. DCCRS became a 501 c 3 nonprofit organization in 2023, and was renamed Open Catskills in 2024.
